The Kite Runner is a novel that talks about the Afghan war. It tells the story of Amir, beginning with his peaceful childhood until his refuge in America years after. The story is dramatic in its first past and bloody in its last quarter, targeting adults interested in realistic dramatic novels.
My challenge was deciding the essence that I wanted to deliver. The beginning of the novel is full of peace and emotions. It talks about The character’s childhood with his close friend and the details of their lives, like sitting under a pomegranate tree and, most importantly, playing with a kite. However, towards the end of the book, the events become much bloodier. It was not a good choice, only to convey the dramatic side and cancel the other one. Also, I did not want to spoil the novel’s ending.
For this reason, I decided to illustrate a colorful kite flying in a clear sky to reflect childhood and innocence part. However, there is a hint of blood(one of the most important symbols in the book) at the bottom of the kite, which also reflects the bloody side at the end of the story. The illustration style was inspired by chalk, reflecting childhood and purity. But in terms of typography, I chose a classy typeface based on Nasikh، because it gives the novel more maturity to fit the target audience.
